During these very tense and delicate times in our country and specifically in our Jewish community, we need to find opportunities to support and celebrate our Jewish culture. One such opportunity is being offered by the Chen Shapira Jewish Culture Fund at Peninsula Sinai Congregation. Annually, this non-political fund brings Jewish and/or Israeli performing artists to the Jewish community of the San Francisco Bay Area to perform with local youth and nourish Jewish culture. It is our mission to promote positive Jewish cultural awareness through the Jewish performing arts. We hope that as the fund grows, we will be able to promote more Jewish performances and fund projects promoting a positive Jewish identity.

Chen Hayim Shapira (1933-2000) was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel. In 1965, he and his wife Rina moved to San Francisco with sons Gill and Doron; daughter Ady was born a few years later. Throughout his years in the Bay Area, Chen was instrumental in broadening Jewish education as well as promoting Jewish and Israeli music and culture within the American Jewish community. The Chen Shapira Jewish Culture Fund of Peninsula Sinai Congregation seeks to continue this work in his spirit and memory.
